Madding Necklace [Mar. 24th, 2011|12:33 am]

tainry
After reading N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Kingdoms, - and enjoying it immensely - I made a Madding necklace! With, of course, peridots and aquamarines. (But mostly glass beads. Peridot is expensive! O.O Also, my birthstone. ♥) It turned out longer than I meant it to be, but it's still a nice springlike palette. I tried a new thing - for me - and did it in a crossing over double strand. Because Madding is the god of Obligations, and obligations involve at least two people, with intentions intertwined. :D

Pink Carnation [Jun. 28th, 2010|10:25 am]

So...pretty much since I started reading the series(around the same time this community started, actually) I've been wanting to make jewelry for Lauren Willig's The Secret History of the Pink Carnation and its sequels.  More specifically, I wanted to make jewelry for Jane, particularly after one book specifically mentions some of the pieces she wears and the significance thereof.  I was originally going to try a locket-based necklace, and I'm still looking for all the bits for it, but...I saw the perfect beads on a trip last week, and had to get them.

Hey guys - below is the text of an email I've been sending out. Feel free to pass this on to your friends and social networks!

The nature of your site makes us think you, and your readers, might be interested in both the books and the Art Auction. You can find our Press Release, complete with high resolution photos of the artwork, here :http://iafauctions.com/press/IAF-Auction-Press-Kit.zip As you can see, it’s a zip file. We hope you might share it with your readers, friends, and social networking members. I’m also appending the text of the Press Release to the end of this email, but you really should look at the artwork pictures. They’re fantastic.

I’m happy to answer any questions you might have, or to pass them on to someone who can. Thanks so much for your attention.

PRESS RELEASE
Interfictions 2, the second anthology of new "interstitial" fiction
from the Interstitial Arts Foundation, will be released by Small Beer
Press on November 3rd, 2009. The anthology, edited by acclaimed
authors Delia Sherman and Christopher Barzak, further explores the
interstices of genre and form, drawing ever-changing maps of what
literary art can be.

In honor of their first Interfictions anthology, the IAF held a
jewelry auction in the summer of 2007: each piece was inspired by
stories within that pioneering collection, which critics hailed as
"odd, deep, delightful...". Now, in 2009, the Interstitial Arts
Foundation is crossing their own previously-erected borders and has
opened the auction up to all manner of portable art.

A wide array of artists - dollmakers, painters, jewelry-crafters,
knitters, and more - were invited to create pieces inspired by the
border-crossing works in the first and second Interfictions
anthologies. Through the alchemy of word and imagination and raw
materials they have created over 30 stunning pieces, ranging from an
evocatively alien sculpture by Jane Washburn (inspired by Theodora
Goss' "Child-Empress of Mars"), an eloquent necklace by SToNZ
(inspired by "Valentines" by Shira Lipkin), complex and exquisite
handmade art books from Wendy Ellertson and Erzebet Yellowboy (of
Papaveria Press), Kate Schaefer's hat that can be both worn and read,
and many other intriguing pieces that are themselves works of
interstitial art: illustration and handcraft, fine art and utilitarian
. . . all and none of the above.

The online Interfictions Auction is set to begin on November 1st and
will run through early December. All of these pieces make excellent
holiday gifts. Opening bids will range from $10 - $50, though of
course the value of many is much higher. All proceeds go toward
supporting the Interstitial Arts Foundation and its projects.

please visit IAFAuctions.com.

About the Interstitial Arts Foundation:
The IAF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the study,
support, and promotion of interstitial art: literature, music, visual
and performance art found in the interstices, the places between
categories and genres – art that crosses borders.

Interfictions Auction - Call for Participants [Apr. 30th, 2009|12:07 pm]

ktempest
The auction we held last year for the Interfictions anthology was partially inspired by this community. I always enjoy seeing your creations and I hope some of you will contribute this year. I know a few who are definitely going to :) And our own [info]qotcpcf is doing the photography.

This fall will see the publication of Interfictions 2, an anthology of interstitial writings -- pieces of art formed of words, but exploding the boundaries of story, poem, list, fiction, genre. No boundary is safe! Nor should we concern ourselves with the safety of such borders, for they are membranous things and meant to be liminal.

Great work has already been done in this area through Interfictions: An Anthology of Interstitial Writing and the auction of last summer inspired by the pieces therein. In last year's auction, readers and authors took the stories from Interfictions and rendered them in wearable art form.

Through the alchemy of word and imagination and raw materials, Mia Nutick crafted evocative poem-pendants, Elizabeth Genco knotted intoxicating skeins of glittering black beads, Helen Pilinovsky invoked a terror of rats in black stick pearls, Deborah Brannon was inspired to select beads, thread wire, and execute her first necklace based on the tale of a girl and her lost brothers. So many others conceived of and brought into the world so many shiny things.

This year, the Interstitial Arts Foundation is crossing their own previously-erected borders and opening the auction up to all manner of portable art! Fancy turning out a pendant, necklace, earrings, or other jewelry item? Fantastic! Delight in weaving fiber, knitting yarn, crocheting fancies? Brilliant! Maker of bags? Shaper of masks? Binder of books? Creator of paper? Composer of music? The IAF wants your beautiful wares inspired by the stories in Interfictions 2!

Now for the tricky part: the auction will run concurrently with the book's release. But never fear! Intrepid artists can still read stories beforehand so their art is well inspired. Simply go to the IAFAuction site and cycle through until one of the story excerpts catches your fancy. Then fill out the form and soon you'll be shaping wire or clicking needles or penning songs as inspiration flits on the heels of prose.

The IAF is accepting submissions through September 20th -- the auction will take place in November 2009.

We're looking forward to seeing which story catches your eye and the art it inspires!

bellatrix lestrange's bracelet [Mar. 17th, 2008|07:04 pm]

ok, i know this is really late {last summer, already?!?!?}, and we haven't been using this community much, but if anyone's still here, i just had to share!
i just finished my own version of the "crystalline bracelet" by abby cross, from the dec '07 issue of bead&button magazine...
i had to make the button 3 times before i came out with one that wasn't so cupped in i couldn't use it, and with the addition of crystals at the corners, it came out square {in my icon} instead of flower-like...
i liked it so much, it made me go back & add picots around the edges of the bracelet as well...

take a look )

Deity Bracelets... Goddess of Love... and the "other one" [Jan. 23rd, 2008|03:11 pm]

twilatee
My son and I are loving the Percy Jackson Series... and pretty much greek mythology in general. I thought that because there is so much available topics that I could have some fun making charm bracelets for each god / goddess.... these are my 3rd and 4th respectivly....

So, here are Aphrodite and Hades...

read about her here.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphrodite
and the Evil one here.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hades

The fine line between Love and DEATH )

I have also done Poseidon... god of the Sea... and Apollo... the poet... sorry no pictures of them in this post though :D... I'm really looking forward to doing Pan, or perhaps Gia both of nature and earth. Kinda a toss up there... Which Gods would you like to see represented in beads?

Thanks for looking :)

Necklace auction [Nov. 12th, 2007|07:17 am]

Not book-related per se (although there will be a chap book to accompany these necklaces published in early 2008 which will also be auctioned), but do take a look at these pretties on my journal? 100% of the money goes to suicide prevention and research.
